5What to Expect before Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy?
Before pelvic floor physical therapy, you need to go through a physical exam to make sure you are suitable for these exercises. During the appointments, you need to provide information about any symptoms and medical history. The exam typically includes two parts:
– External exam: The therapist will check the sacroiliac joints, lumbar spine, and muscles around the pelvic area to look for signs of tenderness, tightness, or pain
– Internal exam: Muscles in the pelvic floor will be evaluated for tenderness, pain, elasticity, and tone. The therapist would insert 1 or 2 fingers into the rectum or vagina during this exam.
In addition, you may be asked to do some tasks to measure voluntary relaxation and contraction of muscles in the pelvic floor. [6]
