Therapist vs Psychologist: What’s the Difference?

1Therapist versus Psychologist: Similarities

In general, both therapists and psychologists are experts who may help people with their behaviour disorders, emotional well-being, and mental health. You need to meet their needs on a regular basis and talk about your problems. They will listen and ask you some questions to provide proper guidance that may help you overcome your problems. Another similarity is that they both need to get licensed to practice their specialty. A long period of training and education in therapeutic fields is necessary to ensure they provide professional and high-quality services. [1]

Therapist versus Psychologist: Main Differences

There are 3 main differences between therapists and psychologists: approach to treatment, authority to diagnose mental problems, and level of training or education. Overall, a therapist is only licensed when they have at least a master’s degree in psychotherapy, while a psychologist needs a doctor’s degree. However, these terms are quite uncertain. Several therapists may call themselves counsellors. On the other hand, some doctorate-level psychologists may have a job title of psychotherapist or therapist. [2]
