8Monocytes in Listeria
Listeria monocytogenes is a strain of bacteria that may lead to listeriosis, which is a dangerous foodborne disease. The condition could cause pregnancy loss and meningitis in newborn babies. Thus, many precautions for Listeria should be given to pregnant women. Normally, it is advised to avoid eating soft cheeses as this food might contain Listeria. While monocytes might fight against infections, they could also transport Listeria into the brain. The bacteria penetrate the monocytes, making it unable for the white blood cells to kill them. As a result, these microorganisms might grow and infect the body. [8]
