6Multiple System Atrophy
Another type of Parkinson’s plus syndrome is multiple system atrophy. It is caused by damage to nerve cells in the spinal cord and brain. This progressive condition typically impacts body movement and the involuntary nervous system, which is responsible for sexual function, motor movement, urination, digestion, sleep, body temperature, breathing, and blood pressure. The exact cause is still unclear. However, scientists believe that a form of protein is present in the nerve cells of many people with multiple system atrophy. This condition can be further divided into two types: cerebellar type and parkinsonian type. Early symptoms may include problems with bladder control, impaired speech, lack of coordination, rigidity, tremors, orthostatic hypotension, and slow movement. [6]
