6Possible Complications of Transverse Myelitis
Transverse myelitis often occurs only in a single episode. Nevertheless, possible complications can happen and persist. These include:
– Painful spasms, tightness, or stiffness in the muscles. These problems tend to occur mostly in the legs and buttocks.
– Pain is a common chronic complication of transverse myelitis.
– Sexual dysfunction is another common complication. Women would have trouble reaching orgasm, while men might have difficulty reaching orgasm or erecting.
– Complete or partial paralysis can happen on one or both legs or arms. This complication would persist after initial signs.
– Anxiety or depression is common in people with long-term complications due to considerable lifestyle changes, effects of sexual dysfunction on their relationships, or the stress of disability or chronic pain.[6]
