5Causes of Shigellosis

You may get a Shigella infection when you are in contact with the bacteria. Common causes include:

– Eating contaminated food: If you are infected and have to handle food, bacteria would be passed to other people who consume the food. In addition, food may be infected with the bacteria when it grows in an area with sewage.

– Consuming contaminated water: Shigella bacteria may be present in water from people with the infection swimming in it or from sewage.

– Direct oral contact: The most common way of spreading Shigellosis is through direct contact from person to person, such as not washing hands properly after changing nappies or going to the toilet, as well as anal sex or oral sex. [5]
