4Possible Complications of Shigellosis
In most cases, shigellosis is mild and does not lead to any lasting complications. However, it is estimated that around 2 percent of infected people reported symptoms of a condition called post-infection arthritis, such as eye irritation, painful urination, or joint pain. It only occurs in those with certain genetic factors and is caused by a body’s response to the Shigella infection. This disease may become chronic, meaning that it would last a couple of years or even the rest of your life. In rare cases, other possible complications of shigellosis include hemolytic-uremic syndrome, seizures in young children, as well as bloodstream infections. [4]
