6Who Is At Risk of Shigellosis?
The following groups are at higher risk of getting shigellosis:
– Young children: Many outbreaks of shigellosis happen in schools and childcare facilities. The bacteria can even be passed from them to other people in the family or neighborhoods.
– People with compromised immune systems, such as those who go through chemotherapy, with diabetes, or HIV/AIDS, can be prone to the Shigella infection as the body does not function properly to fight off bacteria.
– Bisexual, gay, and men having sex with men: The bacteria can be passed from soiled fingers or stool to the mouth of the other during sexual activity.
– Travelers: You may be infected when travelling countries or areas with poor hygiene systems or sanitation. Travelers may also get in contact with the infection through contaminated surfaces, food, or drinks. [6]
