5Noninvasive Procedures and Deep Brain Stimulation
Certain noninvasive treatments may destroy particular areas of the brain that lead to tremors. Two common options include stereotactic radiosurgery and resonance-guided ultrasound:
– In resonance-guided ultrasound, ultrasound waves are used to generate heat in particular areas of the brain without causing damage to the surrounding tissue. During this procedure, an MRI machine is used to guide the direction of the ultrasound.
– In stereotactic radiosurgery, also called gamma knife surgery, radioactive waves are used instead of ultrasound waves [5]
For more severe cases of tremors in multiple sclerosis, deep brain stimulation can be a treatment option. It involves the inserting of electrodes in the part of the brain that controls certain involuntary movements. The surgeon implants a battery around the collarbone to provide the power for the electrodes, which subsequently send electrical pulses to prevent the tremors. Current research on the effectiveness and long-term effects of deep brain stimulation in people with multiple sclerosis is still relatively limited. Therefore, make sure to talk with your healthcare provider before making the decision. There would be possible risks of undergoing brain surgery as well. [6]
