The exact cause of CREST syndrome is still unclear. However, scientists believe that it is an autoimmune disease. This means that the condition causes the immune system to attack body cells. CREST syndrome results in overproduction and buildup of collagen in your body tissues. This fibrous form of protein can affect the normal function of internal organs and the skin. In 15 percent up to 20 percent of reported cases, people with CREST syndrome also experience signs of other autoimmune conditions, such as Sjogren’s syndrome, lupus, or rheumatoid arthritis. [7]
