While many symptoms of CREST syndrome are visible on the skin, more severe complications often happen under this layer. These include:

– Toe and finger ulcers: The condition would restrict the flow of blood to toes and fingers, leading to ulcers in these areas.

– Gastrointestinal issues: Problems with the functioning of esophageal muscles would result in chronic heartburn and trouble swallowing. If the condition affects the intestine, you can experience malnutrition, unexpected weight loss, bloating, diarrhea, and constipation.

– Heart issue: Scarring of heart tissue could cause abnormal heart rhythms or inflamed heart muscle.

– Dry mouth and eyes

– Lung damage

– Dental issues: especially tooth loss and swallowing problems
