Studies have shown that some genetic factors might trigger CREST syndrome. The exact genes are still unknown, but the condition is believed to run in the family. Many causes happen in the same families, meaning people with parents or close relatives with CREST syndrome can be at a higher risk. When it comes to gender, the condition is more common in women than in men. Also, certain forms are more prevalent in a few ethnic groups. For instance, some groups of Native Americans tend to be more prone to a type of CREST syndrome that affects their internal organs. [8]
