Basophils play an important role in overall health by helping your body repair and heal after a wound, infection, or accident. To fight an infection, basophils typically have two main roles. Firstly, basophils contain heparin, a naturally occurring blood-thinning element that can help prevent blood clotting. They can also help with controlling allergies. When the body is exposed to an allergen, histamine is released to react. Also, basophils trigger the body to generate IgE, an antibody that can help regulate the inflammatory response in the body area exposed to the allergen. [4]
