Basophils – What You Need to Know

5Normal Levels of Basophils

Levels of basophils can be expressed by an actual count or a percentage of cells in one microliter of blood. Too low or high numbers may indicate the presence of an underlying condition. A complete blood count can be used to measure your blood composition. Normally, the percentage of basophils in healthy adults should be between 0.5 percent and 1 percent of the white blood cell count. The absolute number should be between 0 and 300 basophils per microliter of blood. The results may suggest:

– Basophilia or abnormally high levels of basophils: This might be a symptom of chronic inflammation that causes excessive production of white blood cells. It might also be associated with hypothyroidism or any condition that triggers the overproduction of white blood cells.

– Basopenia or abnormally low levels of basophils: This might happen with an infection, acute inflammation, hyperthyroidism, or a serious allergy. [5]
