If physical therapy and medications do not improve Achilles tendinitis in 6 months or longer, then your doctor might suggest a surgical process to repair the tendon. Some common options available include:
– Debridement and repair: In this surgical procedure, the damaged part of the Achilles tendon is removed. It is only suggested when your tendons have less than 50 percent damage.
– Gastrocnemius recession: The main goal of this option is to lengthen calf muscles, which subsequently helps reduce stress in the Achilles tendon.
– Debridement with tendon transfer: When your Achilles tendon is damaged by more than 50 percent, a tendon from your big toe can be used for a replacement. [7]
