5Simian Virus 40
In a couple of studies, scientists have found out a possible connection between mesothelioma cancer and the simian virus 40. This microorganism was mainly found in contaminated polio vaccines from the 1950s to 1960s. It is estimated that the virus has affected millions of people. Recent studies indicate that exposure to simian virus 40 alone may not be sufficient to trigger this form of cancer. However, it would increase the risk in those exposed to asbestos and other carcinogens. More research is needed to confirm the link between mesothelioma cancer in humans and the simian virus 40.
