9Long-Term Use
If you cannot be weaned from a ventilator, then it might need to use a tracheostomy. In most cases, an endotracheal tube should be kept in place for no more than several weeks because it would eventually lead to permanent damage to the windpipe or vocal cords. For those who plan to use a ventilator in the long run, the doctor might need to have surgery to create an opening in their neck. The ventilator will be attached via this part instead of a tube.
