6How to Interpret ALT Test Results
The normal results for an ALT test can vary from lab to lab. In general, they should range from 29 to 33 IU/L for men and 19 to 25 IU/L for women. Certain factors may affect the range, such as age and sex. Therefore, make sure to discuss with your healthcare provider about the results.
Higher-than-normal results may suggest liver damage, which can be caused by cirrhosis, hepatitis, liver cancer, dead liver tissue, reduced blood flow to the liver, diabetes, mononucleosis, or hemochromatosis. Lower-than-normal results may suggest a healthy liver, but they may be linked to long-term mortality. [6]
