Therapist vs Psychologist: What’s the Difference?

4Therapist Qualifications

Therapists tend to have training or education in psychotherapy. Associated specialties may include substance abuse, school counselling, community counselling, career counselling, group therapy, family counselling, marriage counselling, play therapy, or addiction counselling. All licensed therapists should have at least a master’s degree and additional training in the related field. Specific requirements for licenses may vary from state to state. Although psychologists are likely to have higher requirements on training and education, it does not necessarily mean that therapists are more inferior.  [6]

Should You Visit a Therapist or a Psychologist?

The answer depends on which problems you want to resolve. It is very important to ask questions about their approaches and specializations. Both specialists can be a good option for marriage or divorce problems, general counselling, or grief. They are also good for dealing with mental health issues like depression or anxiety. Go for a psychologist when you want to make solid changes you your behaviors or thought patterns. For conditions that lead to serious symptoms that disrupt your daily life, choose a clinical psychologist as they are well trained and have a higher level of training and education.  [7]
