3Parts of the Duodenum
In general, the duodenum can be divided into four main parts:
– The duodenal bulb: Also known as the superior part, it is attached to the liver through the hepatoduodenal ligament. This allows nutrients to be transported to the liver from the small intestine. The part also helps the duodenum receive bile from the liver.
– The descending part: This second segment is located above your right kidney. It is attached to the pancreas through the pancreatic duct. This small tube allows pancreatic enzymes to move into your duodenum to aid in breaking down food and absorbing nutrients.
– The transverse part: This segment is located behind a group of blood vessels and in front of the aorta, traveling from right to left.
– The ascending part: This is the last segment of the duodenum, which is located to the left and on top of the aorta. [3]
