Plan B (Morning-After Pill) – What You Need to Know

3When to Use Plan B

To prevent an unplanned pregnancy after having unprotected sex, you should take Plan B as soon as possible, ideally within 3 days (72 hours) and no more than 120 hours (5 days). The sooner you take it, the more effective the drug will be. In addition, you can use it any time during the menstrual cycle. Inform your doctor immediately to find another option if you feel nauseated or vomit within several hours after taking the medication. [4]

What to Expect

After taking Plan B, you may expect your period to delay by up to 7 days. If you do not get the period within 3 to 4 weeks of taking Plan B, it is advisable to take a pregnancy test. In most cases, you do not have to contact your doctor after taking the medication. Nevertheless, if you notice spotting or bleeding that persists longer than a week or experience serious pain in the lower abdomen 3 to 5 weeks after taking Plan B, visit your doctor as well. These problems may indicate the implanting of the fertilized egg outside the uterus or a miscarriage. [5]
