Medicare IRMAA: What Is It and When Does It Apply?

3What Is Medicare IRMAA?

For most parts of Medicare, you have to pay a premium per month. In certain circumstances, this monthly premium can be determined by your income level. IRMAA stands for income-related monthly adjustment amount, which applies to Medicare participants with high income levels. In general, IRMAA is set by the Social Security Administration based on information from the Internal Revenue Service.

If IRMAA applies to you, the Social Security Administration will send a mail notice to inform you. It includes the following information:

– The calculation of IRMAA

– What to do when the information is wrong

– What to do when you had a life-changing event or a decrease in income

After this notice, you will get another one for the initial determination, which will include more information, including when IRMAA goes into effects and what you can do to appeal it. IRMAA is reevaluated each year to make sure it can be removed, updated, or added in accordance with your latest income level. [3]
