6Social Security Section 218 and Mandatory Medicare Coverage Rule
Section 218 is a part of the Social Security Administration that enables state governments to offer healthcare and retirement coverage to state or local employees. This can be either Medicare only or a combination of Medicare and Social Security coverage. The eligibility to these benefits are only based on particular job descriptions. You have to be a public employee of a local or state government, which may apply to most first responders. Section 218 is currently agreed by all states in the U.S. to offer Medicare coverage. [7]
According to the 1986 mandatory Medicare coverage rule, any employee of the local or state government hired from 31 March 1986 will be eligible for Medicare coverage. However, there are some exceptions:
– Nonresident individuals
– Employees hired to be alleviated from unemployment
– Temporary employees who provide temporary services
– Any services in an institution, home, or hospital
– Students attending classes at a university, college, or school where they are working [8]
