How Monocytes Function in the Body

10Monocytes in Lymphoma

Studies have shown that monocytes might have some unwanted actions associated with cancerous behaviors and tumors of the lymphocyte-white blood cells. The presence and activities of macrophages in tumors might enable tumor cells to establish a supply of blood and to penetrate and circulate through the bloodstream. This finding may help develop a therapy to target macrophages, which can help prevent tumor growth and metastasis.

For many diseases, some doctors are experimenting with the absolute monocyte count as a worse prognosis or risk indicator before starting treatment. When the number of monocytes increases over a specific threshold, it might be related to a poorer outlook in those with Hodgkin disease and T-cell lymphomas. [10]
