6Recommended Cholesterol Levels for Adults
As said above, average cholesterol levels in adults are higher than those in children. The recommended levels of total cholesterol in this age range should be no more than 200 mg/dL (milligrams per deciliter). A result from 200 to 239 mg/dL is borderline high and a result higher than 240 mg/dL is high.
The levels of LDL cholesterol should be no more than 100 mg/dL. The range between 100 and 129 mg/dL is fine for those without heart problems. A result between 130 and 159 mg/dL is typically borderline high and a result between 160 and 189 mg/dL is high.
On the contrary to total and LDL cholesterol, HDL should be at high levels. If they drop below 40 mg/dL, it can increase the risk of heart issues. A result between 41 and 59 mg/dL is borderline low. The best range should be higher than 60 mg/dL. [6]
