Avonex belongs to a class of medication called disease-modifying therapy. The active ingredient in this drug is interferon beta-1a. In general, interferons are protein cells that are naturally released by the immune system for different functions in the body. They play an important part in how the immune system works. The beta-1a is a synthetic version of interferons. Scientists have not fully found out how Avonex works to help with relapsing multiple sclerosis. Nevertheless, it is believed that the medication makes certain changes in the immunity to prevent it from attacking healthy cells.
