4Fortified Grains
Many kinds of grains, including pasta and bread, are fortified during the production to improve the level of folic acid. The exact content could vary in different types, but a typical cup of cooked spaghetti would provide around 100 mcg of folate or 25 percent of the recommended daily intake. Many studies have shown that folic acid in these fortified products are actually easier for the body to absorb than natural folate in foods. However, some enzymes in the stomach might find it harder to break down fortified grains, which would lead to the accumulation of unmetabolized folate. Therefore, it is advisable to have a well-balanced diet that is high in natural folic acid and moderate in fortified grains. [4]
