8Vaccination against Shingles
Currently, there is only one vaccine available for preventing shingles in the United States. It is called recombinant zoster vaccine, also known as Shingix. The vaccine is only given to older people who are over 50 years old. In previous years, another vaccine called Zostavax was also used. However, the government decided to stop distributing it in 2020. Studies have shown that getting 2 dosages of Shingrix can be up to 90 percent effective at shingles prevention. After 4 year, the rate goes down to 85 percent. If you get vaccinated before getting shingles, the symptoms would be less serious. It also reduces the risk of postherpetic neuralgia, a possible complication of shingles. [8]
