In some worse cases, you might need surgery to treat shoulder bursitis. A doctor often does not suggest this option unless your symptoms do not improve within a few months. If surgery is recommended, it is often performed arthroscopically. During this procedure, the surgeon will make some small incisions in the skin to insert surgical instruments and remove damaged tissues around the bursae. In some cases, the whole bursa can be removed to give the tendon more space. Physical therapy is often needed after that to speed up recovery. [7]
