In most cases, symptoms of pericarditis can be improved with some anti-inflammatory medications and analgesics. They can resolve in several weeks without permanent cardiac issues. For people with the cardiac form, fluid in the pericardial sac can be drained via a small catheter to restore basic function. Chronic pericarditis should be treated with more aggressive treatments to resolve underlying inflammation. Lastly, symptoms of constrictive pericarditis would be treated with digitalis, diuretics, and bed rest. When serious complications happen, surgery is needed. [6]
