What is Monkeypox – Symptoms, Transmission, Treatments & Prevention

4Treatments of Monkeypox

Though monkeypox has no proven scientific treatment, some antiviral medications can help relieve symptoms. The Strategic National Stockpile recommends the following medical counter measurements to suppress monkeypox infections.

Tecovirimat

Tecovirimat is the first antipoxviral medicine approved by FDA to treat smallpox, and it is also regarded as an expanded access treatment for monkeypox in an outbreak. The drug inhibits the activities of orthopoxvirus VP37 envelope wrapping protein and slows down the spreading speed within the body.

Cidofovir

Cidofovir is an antiviral medicine commonly used to treat cytomegalovirus retinitis (viral eye infection) in people with AIDs. Though no data is available to prove the effectiveness of Cidofovir in treating monkeypox in humans, it does have the abilities fighting against poxviruses. Therefore, Cidofovir can serve as a supplementary therapy on a limited basis.

Vaccinia Immune Globulin Intravenous

Vaccinia immune globulin intravenous is a testified treatment to treat complications resulting from smallpox vaccination, including aberrant infections, vaccinia infections, severe generalized vaccinia, progressive vaccinia, and eczema vaccinatum. It can be taken as a compassionate use protocol to boost some immunity among people during a monkeypox outbreak. [4]
