The exact causes of erosive osteoarthritis are still quite controversial. It is mainly because scientists are still unsure whether this condition is a distinct form of arthritis or an aggressive type of osteoarthritis. Conventional osteoarthritis may be caused by wear and tear of the joints over time or an injury that does not heal properly. However, these are not the possible causes of erosive osteoarthritis. Recent studies have found that there might be a genetic link to the condition. It means that the risk is higher in those who have children, siblings, or parents with the disease. Other possible causes of erosive osteoarthritis include drug therapy, smoking, a loss of muscular strength, limited mobility, problems with the adrenal or thyroid gland, changes in menopausal hormones, and inflammatory diseases, such as irritable bowel syndrome or rheumatic disease.
