7Treatment Options for Leukemia Relapses
Treatment Options for AML Relapses
More intensive chemotherapy may help treat an AML relapse. In addition, your doctor may suggest a stem cell transplant, depending on the overall health and age. Immunnotherapy with the medication gemtuzumab ozogamicin can be another possible option. If an AML relapse occurs due to some genetic changes, several forms of target therapies can help. These include:
– Enasidenib for the IDH2 gene changes
– Ivosidenib for the IDH1 gene changes
– Gilteritinib for the FLT3 gene changes [9]
Treatment Options for ALL Relapses
Chemotherapy can also be used for treating an ALL relapse. This procedure tends to be more intensitve than it was during the first treatment. Nevertheless, if your body does not respond well to chemotherapy, a stem cell transplant may be suggested. Some specific forms of ALL, especially when there is a presence of genetic changes, may be treated with immunotherapy medications. These include Imatinib for ALL that is positive for the Philadelphia chromosome and Inotuzumab ozogamicin or Blinatumonab for B-cell ALL. [10]
