Ways to Sleep Better with Ulcerative Colitis

6Meditation

Along with other relaxation techniques, meditation may provide many health benefits that help those with ulcerative colitis sleep better. More especially, mindfulness meditation has been shown to alleviate some sleep issues. It would also help with anxiety, a common trigger of sleep issues in many people with ulcerative colitis. A recent study indicated that mindfulness-based therapy, which combines meditation with other techniques, could improve symptoms of anxiety and, in turn, make it easier to fall asleep. [8]

Be Careful with Sleep Aids

Many OTC sleep aids are available to help people fall and stay asleep better. However, not all of these are suitable for individuals with ulcerative colitis. For instance, magnesium is often considered to be a sleep aid. However, recent studies have shown that it would result in gastrointestinal problems, such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Other OTC drugs for sleeping can be addictive as well, so make sure to consult your healthcare provider before taking them. [9]

Use Heating Pads

If cramps or pain caused by ulcerative colitis make it difficult to fall asleep, consider using a heating pad for temporary relief. You can simply place a hot water bottle or an electric heating pad directly on the stomach. Heat could provide a soothing effect and help alleviate symptoms of flares. It is advisable to purchase an electric heating pad with a timer so that you can make sure it will shut off automatically once you fall asleep, which helps lower the risk of burns. [10]
