7How to Interpret A1C Results
The results of an A1C test are shown as a percentage. In general, a higher number indicates a higher average levels of blood sugar. You can interpret the results for diabetes diagnosis as follows:
– A result below 5.7 percent is normal
– A result between 5.7 percent and 6.4 percent indicates prediabetes
– A result above 6.5 percent on two separate tests suggests diabetes
For most people with diabetes, a level of less than 7 percent is a common target during their treatment. Within this level, the risk of complications related to diabetes is lower. If the results are higher than 7 percent, some changes should be made in the current treatment plan. [7]
