8Medication Treatments
Medications that can help improve symptoms of transverse myelitis include:
– Painkillers: Since chronic pain is not uncommon in people with the condition, medications like naproxen sodium, ibuprofen, or acetaminophen can help alleviate muscle pain. Antidepressant drugs and anticonvulsants can also be used for treating nerve pain.
– Antiviral medications: When transverse myelitis is caused by a viral infection in the spinal cord, antibiotics can be prescribed.
– Drugs to prevent recurrences: When you are diagnosed with antibodies related to neuromyelitis optica, your doctor would suggest ongoing medications like immunosuppressants or corticosteroids to reduce the risks.
– Other medications for treating additional problems, such as depression, bowel or urinary dysfunction, and muscle spasticity.[8]
