12Prognosis
Most patients with transverse myelitis can at least recover partially. However, this process takes around 1 or more years. Most improvements happen during the first 3 months, depending on the underlying cause. After an attack, you might fall into 1 of 3 types:
– Slight or no disability: Only minimal persistent signs
– Moderate disability: Mobility is possible with common problems like bowel and bladder issues, tingling, numbness, and trouble walking
– Severe disability: Certain patients might need assistance permanently with daily activities and care
It can be hard to have a precise prognosis of transverse myelitis. Most cases can be determined by the underlying cause.[12]
