8Complications of the Symptoms
Mild Cases of C. Difficile in the large intestine could go on without causing further widespread damages, but serious cases might cause other complications in the long run. These complications include:
— Acute kidney injury: since C. Difficile infection comes along with watery diarrhea, it’s no surprise that most severe cases present with serious dehydration. Dehydration of the individual is the underlying cause of injury to the kidney.
— Perforation of the Colon Lining: The bacteria destroys cells of the large intestinal lining, leading to holes in the colon. A rupture of the intestinal cavity created a route for bacteria to invade the abdominal cavity, which can be life-threatening. This could also result from a toxic megacolon in severe cases.
— Toxic Megacolon: This condition is rare, resulting in an enlarged colon. If left untreated, it is likely to degenerate into perforations of the colon lining. The individual cannot expel gas from their gas or feces, which is the reason for the gut enlargement. Often, this problem is addressed surgically. [8]
