9Surgery
In many cases when stomach ulcers lead to internal bleeding, surgery is needed. Some options available include:
– Pyloroplasty: The procedure enlarges the pylorus, which is the opening to the small intestine and duodenum. This allows stomach contents to pass through the stomach.
– Vagotomy: This procedure cuts a part of the vagus nerve, which transmits messages to the stomach from the brain. As a result, it reduces the secretion of stomach acids to relieve symptoms.
– Antrectomy: This procedure removes the antrum, which releases a hormone affecting the release of digestive juices. It is often performed with a vagotomy.[9]
