Diagnosing social communication disorder can be challenging in children who are non-verbal or who are too young to speak. This can only be done in those kids who are quite high-functioning and verbal. A diagnosis is typically made after the age of 4 to 5 years old when the children start to use spoken language.
To diagnose social communication disorder, you may need to visit a speech-language therapist. They will take a behavioral and medical history, talk with the parents or teachers, and do certain diagnostic tests.
