Scientists are still not sure about the precise cause of Reye’s syndrome. Some factors can play a role. Many studies have shown that it would be triggered when a viral infection is treated with aspirin. It is more common in kids and teens who experience a fatty acid oxidation disorder, which makes it impossible for the body to break down fatty acids. OTC drugs like bismuth subsalicylate might also contain salicylates, an ingredient in aspirin. They should not be given to kids with a viral infection. Lastly, exposure to herbicides or paint thinners could also increase the risk of developing Reye’s syndrome.[4]
