Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Stages: What to Expect

9Treatment Options for Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis cannot be cured, but some treatment options can help manage the symptoms. These include:

– Medications may help slow the progression and reduce the frequency of relapses. Common options include alemtuzumab, dimethyl fumarate, siponimod, glatiramer, and beta-interferons. Steroids can also be injected to help alleviate symptoms and inflammation during a relapse.

– Plasma exchange would help with more serious symptoms when medications are not effective. In this treatment, blood is removed from the body and then the doctor will extract harmful substances from it before returning to the body.

– Physical therapy: You will use some assistive devices and learn helpful exercises to improve physical strength and daily function.

– Complementary therapy: Pilates, acupuncture, reflexology, tai chi, yoga, or mindfulness. While these options have not clinically proven, the would help manage the symptoms in many patients with multiple sclerosis.[9]
