7Medical Treatments
To reduce pain caused by Lhermitte’s sign, your doctor might prescribe antiseizure drugs. They work by regulating electrical impulses in the body. Common options include oxcarbazepine, carbamazepine, and gabapentin. Since this phenomenon typically occurs with multiple sclerosis, steroids may be injected. Other possible treatments may include sodium channel blockers, antidepressants, or muscle relaxers. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation or TENS can also help. In this procedure, an electrical charge is generated to help alleviate pain and inflammation. Electromagnetic fields targeted around the skull would help manage many symptoms of multiple sclerosis, including Lhermitte’s sign. However, more research is needed on the effectiveness of TENS.
