Korsakoff syndrome requires a clinical diagnosis. This means a doctor has to represent his or her best judgment about the possible causes of the symptoms. There are currently no particular lab tests or imaging techniques to verify that you have this condition. It can be challenging to identify Korsakoff syndrome partly because the symptoms are quite similar to those in alcoholic individuals, such as head injury, infection, intoxication, and withdrawal.
The diagnosis might include a medical workup for cognitive changes or memory loss, such as questions concerning your alcohol consumption. Everyone who is admitted to the hospital due to an alcoholic-related problem should be carefully examined for these problems. The procedure should also have supplementary questions to check for recent memory. If the results indicate impairment, a more detailed test might be needed. [6]
