Surgery is often the last resort when ulcerative colitis progresses and becomes very serious. During the process, your doctor might remove a part of the whole rectum or colon. This is known as a proctocolectomy. It typically takes anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks to recover fully from the surgery. While this treatment can help you get rid of ulcerative colitis, it might result in many complications. Without a colon, your body might find it harder to produce vitamin B12 from healthy bacteria or reabsorb water. Also, your immune function might also be weakened after the surgery.
