If a chronic cough is caused by allergens in the environment, you can take certain OTC anti-allergy medications to improve symptoms. Decongestants, antihistamines, and a combination of both options are standard treatment options for allergies.

– Antihistamines can block histamine in the body cells, which stimulates the immune system to activate in response to an allergy. Keep in mind that drowsiness can be a possible side effect.

– Decongestants are effective in relieving congestion. They are available in the form of eye drops, nasal sprays, liquids, and tablets. You can use them with antihistamines.

– Nasal corticosteroid sprays can help reduce allergy-induced cough and other symptoms. [8]
