Risk factors for developing catatonic schizophrenia are similar to those for other subtypes of schizophrenia subtypes. These include:
– Viral infection: Some viral infections would make children more prone to catatonic schizophrenia
– Genetics: People with a parent or sibling experiencing this condition can be at a higher risk
– Stress: Severe stress, especially in the early stages of life would increase the risk. Stressful events tend to happen just before symptoms of catatonic schizophrenia occur
– Fetal malnutrition: When pregnant women do not get sufficient nutrition, the fetus would suffer from malnutrition and are more predisposed to the condition
– Trauma or abuse in childhood
