9Medication Treatments
The first treatment option for catatonia is usually medication. Some common drugs used for this condition include benzodiazepines, tricyclic antidepressants, and muscle relaxants. Benzodiazepines, such as diazepam, lorazepam, and clonazepam, are often the first prescribed medications. They work by increasing GABA receptors in your brain, which can improve symptoms of catatonia. Other options include zolpidem, thyroid hormone, lithium carbonate, carbamazepine, bromocriptine, and amobarbital. When your body does not respond to the medications after five days or when symptoms become worse, other treatments can be suggested. [8]
