6High Levels of Dihydrotestosterone
Dihydrotestosterone or DHT is another type of hormone in men. As an androgen, it signals the appearance of male characteristics and plays an important part in puberty. It is responsible for the development and growth of the prostate as well. Certain studies have identified that even when the levels of testosterone go down, the levels of DHT could be still high. This subsequently increases the risk of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Keep in mind that not all males produce DHT, and the condition seems not to develop in those people who do not produce this hormone. This indicates that there might be a possible association between benign prostatic hyperplasia and high levels of DHT. [6]
