9 Common Causes of Appendicitis

5Infections

In some cases, appendicitis can be caused by a fungal, bacterial, or viral infection in other parts of the body that spreads to the appendix. Below are the most common causes of infection that may increase the risk of appendicitis:

– Bacteroides: These bacteria already exist in the digestive tract

– Pseudomonas bacteria: They can be found in water, soil, and moist spaces, such as toilets and sinks

– E. coli: They inhabit foods, the surrounding environment, as well as animals’ intestines. Most strains tend to be harmless, but some may lead to diseases

– Salmonella: They are foodborne bacteria that often lead to gastrointestinal upset, such as vomiting, nausea, or diarrhea. More severe complications would happen if left untreated

– Adenovirus: This virus is very common. It can spread through the air or contact and cause cold-like symptoms or bladder infections

– Measles: This is a very contagious virus, which tends to spread through contact and the air

– Shigella bacteria: These germs are contagious and often lead to diarrhea illnesses. Typical symptoms may last less than a week.

– Fungal infections like histoplasmosis and mucormycosis. Most individuals have no or only mild symptoms after breathing in their spores. However, an infection can be serious in those with a compromised immune system [7]
